The Stonewall Riot
June 28, 1969, New York City, Christopher Street
The Stonewall Riot was the start of the Gay Rights Movement, the riot resulted from a police raid on an illegal gay bar. Even though police were legally justified in raiding the club, which was serving liquor without a license among other violations, New York's gay community had grown tired of police departments targeting gay clubs. During the raid, some of the Stone Wall Inn employees were arrested. This Riot was followed by several days of demonstrations in New York and was the start of the Gay Liberations front as well as other organizations.
